Chicago Police Community in Mourning and Prayer
The Chicago law enforcement community is facing a moment of deep sorrow and uncertainty following a tragic shooting that claimed the life of one officer and left another fighting for his life.
Officer John Bartholomew was fatally shot during an attempted escape by a prisoner at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital on Saturday. In the same incident, his partner—a 57-year-old officer with more than two decades of service in the Chicago Police Department—was critically wounded after being shot in the face.
The injured officer remains in extremely critical condition at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where medical teams continue to fight to save his life. According to John Catanzara, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7, the situation is dire.
“It’s extremely grave… It’s going to take a miracle.”
The shooting has shaken not only fellow officers but the broader Chicago community. It marks one of the most serious incidents involving multiple officers since the tragic 2021 shooting of Ella French, who was killed in the line of duty, and the severe wounding of her partner, Carloz Yanez Jr..
Yanez, who survived being shot multiple times in that earlier incident and later lost one of his eyes, attended Monday’s court proceedings. His presence served as both a reminder of past tragedy and a symbol of resilience.
“My emotions were all over the place,” Yanez said. “It brings back memories.”
Despite his own experience, Yanez offered a message of hope and faith for the wounded officer, urging the public and fellow officers to come together in prayer.
“You all prayed for me. Please pray for the families… I hope he makes a miraculous recovery.”
The events have also sparked broader conversations among elected officials, some of whom have raised concerns about public safety policies, including the SAFE-T Act, and whether systemic failures may have contributed to the circumstances surrounding the incident.
