The Carencro community is mourning the heartbreaking and sudden loss of Rene Vargas, a 32-year-old resident whose life was tragically cut short in a hit-and-run crash on Sunday night along the I-49 Service Road near Turf Lane in Carencro, Louisiana.

According to Louisiana State Police, the crash occurred around 9:15 p.m. on June 14, 2026. Preliminary investigations indicate that Rene was traveling south on an electric scooter along the service road when he was struck from behind by a 2014 Ford Focus traveling in the same direction. Authorities reported that the driver allegedly fled the scene following the collision rather than stopping to render aid or contact emergency services.

Despite rapid response from first responders, Rene suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following an investigation, authorities identified and arrested 20-year-old Malachi Thibodeaux of Grand Coteau in connection with the incident. He has been charged with hit-and-run resulting in death.
