In Loving Memory of Heather Avery
There are moments in life when tragedy strikes so suddenly and so deeply that words feel entirely insufficient. This is one of those moments. Today, we pause with heavy hearts to honor the life, service, and sacrifice of Deputy Heather Avery—a woman who stood for courage, commitment, and selfless dedication to others.
Deputy Avery’s life was tragically taken in the line of duty while doing what she had pledged herself to—protecting and serving her community. In a heartbreaking incident along Interstate 10 near SH 124, she was conducting traffic control in a work zone when an 18-wheeler crashed into her SUV. What should have been another day of service became a devastating loss that has shaken her department, her loved ones, and all who understand the risks borne by those who wear the badge.
As Precinct 1 Constable Jevonne Pollard so painfully expressed, “There are no words that you can say or give to bring comfort to those who loved Deputy Heather Avery.” That truth echoes loudly today. No tribute can fully capture the depth of grief felt by her family, the heartbreak of her colleagues, or the emptiness left in the wake of her passing.
Yet, in remembering Deputy Avery, we find a way to honor her life—not just in the way she died, but in the way she lived. She embodied bravery in the face of uncertainty, dedication in the face of challenge, and compassion in the service of others. Her commitment was not simply a profession; it was a calling, one she fulfilled with honor and integrity.
As her community mourns this profound loss, may they also hold tightly to the memory of her strength, her sacrifice, and her unwavering devotion. Though her watch has ended, her legacy will endure in the lives she touched, the service she gave, and the example she set.
May she rest in peace, and may her courage never be forgotten.
