In Loving Memory of the Children of Cedar Grove, Caddo Parish
The Caddo Parish community is enduring a grief so profound that words can scarcely contain it. In the early morning hours of April 19, 2026, a tragic act of violence in the Cedar Grove neighborhood claimed the lives of eight young children: Jayla Elkins (3), Shayla Elkins (5), Kayla Pugh (6), Layla Pugh (7), Markaydon Pugh (10), Sariahh Snow (11), Khedarrion Snow (6), and Braylon Snow (5).
Seven children and their cousin—each with their own name, their own light, and their own unfolding story—were taken in a moment that has left families shattered and an entire community struggling to comprehend the depth of the loss.
These were children whose lives were still just beginning. They were shaped by small joys, daily routines, laughter, and the love of those around them. In their absence, there is a silence that reaches far beyond one neighborhood, touching everyone who hears their names and recognizes the weight of what has been lost.
For the families left behind, grief is not only immediate but enduring. It is carried in memories that now feel both precious and painful, in futures that were imagined but will never arrive, and in the quiet spaces where their presence once was. No words can lessen that sorrow, but compassion and solidarity remain essential in its wake.
The Cedar Grove neighborhood, and Caddo Parish as a whole, now faces the difficult path of mourning together. In times of such devastation, communities often lean on one another—sharing support, remembrance, and the fragile hope that healing, though distant, is still possible.
These children will be remembered not for the tragedy that took them, but for the lives they lived and the love they inspired. Their names carry a weight that must not be forgotten, and their memory becomes a call for unity, care, and protection of the most vulnerable.
To Jayla, Shayla, Kayla, Layla, Markaydon, Sariahh, Khedarrion, and Braylon: you are deeply loved, you are profoundly missed, and you will never be forgotten.
May your families find strength in one another, and may your community hold your memory with reverence, compassion, and enduring love.
