In Loving Memory of the Innocent Lives Lost in Shreveport
On April 19, 2026, the Shreveport community was shattered by an unimaginable tragedy that left a deep wound in the hearts of families, neighbors, and all who heard the news. In the wake of this devastating incident, we pause to honor and remember the precious lives of the children—Jayla Elkins, Shayla Elkins, Kayla Pugh, Layla Pugh, Markaydon Pugh, Sariahh Snow, Khedarrion Snow, and Braylon Snow—who were taken far too soon, and to extend compassion to the survivors whose lives have been forever changed.
This tribute is written with reverence for the innocence, joy, and boundless potential of each child whose life was cut short:
Jayla Elkins, age 3
A bright and tender soul whose earliest years were filled with laughter, curiosity, and love. Though her time on earth was brief, her presence brought light to those around her in ways that will never be forgotten.
Shayla Elkins, age 5
A sweet and energetic child with a spirit full of wonder. Shayla’s smile and playful heart created memories that her loved ones will carry forever.
Kayla Pugh, age 6
A gentle young girl whose kindness and innocence reflected the beauty of childhood. Kayla’s life, though short, was filled with love that will continue to echo through the hearts of her family.
Layla Pugh, age 7
Full of imagination and dreams, Layla carried a vibrant spirit that brought joy into every room. Her memory remains a symbol of hope and the life that should have had so many more years to grow.
Markaydon Pugh, age 10
A curious and growing young boy, full of promise and personality. Markaydon’s presence left a lasting imprint, a reminder of a future that deserved to unfold.
Sariahh Snow, age 11
A thoughtful and bright soul, beginning to discover her place in the world. Sariahh is remembered for her gentle nature and the love she shared so freely.
Khedarrion Snow, age 6
A joyful child whose laughter and energy could light up any space. Khedarrion’s innocent spirit brought happiness to all who knew him.
Braylon Snow, age 5
A little boy full of warmth, curiosity, and life. Braylon’s memory will forever stand as a reminder of the beauty and fragility of childhood.
Each of these children was deeply loved—sons and daughters, siblings, cousins, and friends. Their lives were filled with the simple, extraordinary magic of being young: laughter echoing through homes, games played without worry, dreams imagined without limits, and the constant embrace of family. It is that innocence that makes this loss so profoundly painful.
In addition to the children, two adult women—including Shaneiqua Pugh—were critically injured in this tragedy. A 13-year-old boy, who bravely escaped during the chaos, was also injured but is expected to recover. Their survival stands as a fragile thread of hope amid overwhelming grief, and many continue to hold them in thought as they begin the long road toward healing.
Authorities have shared that the violence stemmed from a domestic situation that escalated into devastating events across multiple homes in Shreveport’s Cedar Grove neighborhood. The individual identified in connection with this tragedy, 31-year-old Shamar Elkins, later died following an armed confrontation with law enforcement after a pursuit into neighboring Bossier Parish.
In moments like these, words fall short. There is no explanation that can ease the heartbreak or restore what has been lost. But there is remembrance. There is love. And there is a collective promise to never forget these children—not for the tragedy that took them, but for the lives they lived, however brief.
May their names be spoken with tenderness.
May their memories be carried with love.
And may their light continue to shine in the hearts of all who mourn them.
Gone too soon, but never forgotten.
